"On September 11, 2001, the unflinching heroism of hundreds of police and law enforcement personnel involved in rescue operations at the World Trade Center exemplified the ideal of a good cop. These heroes stand in stark contrast to some of their colleagues who engage in misconduct and even crime. What makes a good cop versus a bad cop? Although the author focuses specifically on the importance of character in law enforcement, the book has broader application to questions of individual character, public trust, corruption, moral training, and ethics education within society at large."  This is an excellent comprehensive look at character and ethics.
The author writes, "Enforcing Ethics is designed to encourage police and corrections recruits and officers to think critically and carefully about their actions.  The scenario-based workbook presents challenging questions such as, 'would you follow a direct order from a supervisor if you believed the order was unethical or inappropriate?'  The Enforcing Ethics workbook offers 45 practical scenarios that police and corrections officers may encounter in their careers."  This is an excellent book to help recruits and seasoned officers prepare for oral board interviews.
This is a book like no other on the academy's reading list.  It is a fictional story that "contains secrets that are currently changing our world.  Drawing upon ancient wisdom, it tells you how to make connections among the events happing in your life right now... the story it tells is a gripping one of adventure and discovery... that has the power to crystallize your perceptions of why you are where you are in life... and to direct your steps with... a new optimism."  This book has been passed along by friends to friends for many years.  There is a reason it is a best-seller.
