Introduction |
 |
Every agency in the POST program may seek certification as a Telecourse
(Multimedia) Presenter.
Appointment of a Coordinator is required for presentation of POST
Telecourses for continuing professional training (CPT) credit. This
workshop will review the Telecourse Coordinator’s role and
responsibilities as defined by POST.
In addition, training will include:
▪
Using the POST video resources to create a comprehensive training plan
for your agency
▪
Satisfying POST CPT requirements using POST video assets
▪
Understanding the scope and requirements of legislatively mandated
training
▪
Facilitating skills that ensure an environment conducive to learning
▪
Maintaining training records and archiving training resources
▪
Complying with POST certification requirements
▪
Creating a team of trained supervisors to deliver POST-certified
training
|
|
In addition to preparing Telecourse Coordinators, this
workshop is open to all law enforcement supervisors,
dispatch supervisors, and FTO supervisors who wish to learn
facilitation techniques, experience sample group
interactions, learn methods and techniques for engaging
officers in mandated training, and learn the importance of
adhering to local agency policy and procedures.
Facilitation techniques is a unique skill that
engages officers and dispatchers in training and is
mandatory to train today’s adult learners.
Agencies who implement POST-certified video training
are able to provide needed training and situational
awareness in critical areas, retain proper records of such
training, while also realizing significant savings on
training costs and staff hours.
The POST Telecourse Program presents a unique opportunity to
forge a unique training force. Fourteen programs are offered
annually on topics including:
legal and case law updates, leadership, ethics and
professionalism, officer survival techniques, contemporary
law enforcement subjects, legislative mandates, and civil
liability issues.
POST
training DVDs can be organized into comprehensive
training programs that satisfy POST’s continuing
professional training (CPT) requirements,
legislatively-mandated training, and agency concerns with
policy compliance at no cost to the agency.

POST
has developed a 16-hour statewide workshop to train first-line
supervisors (usually sergeants) to properly implement the DVD-based Line-Up Training Program. The facilitators' workshop will
provide first-line supervisors with an understanding of the
Line-Up Training Program, facilitation techniques, sample group
interaction methods, techniques for engaging officers in training, and
importance of adhering to local agency policy and procedure.
The
POST Line-Up Training Program training sessions are designed to
satisfy continuing professional training (CPT) requirements using a
standardized approach to line-up training via high-quality, interactive
digital video disc (DVD) technology in small group settings. The
program relies upon first-line supervisors, who serve as the majority of
instructors in line-up training settings. Key to the program is the
incorporation of interactive discussions designed around job-related
scenarios that engage veteran officers in practical problem solving
exercises based on agency policy. Topics for the program include
pursuit driving, officer safety, enforcement of the law, seizure of evidence, tactical
response, use of force and ethical decision making. Officers may earn
20 hours of continuing professional training (CPT) credit using
the program internally without having to attend off-site training. All
of these programs are available to agencies in the program at
no cost.

Imagine Providing 52 Hours Of
Training Every Year Without An Hour Of Overtime |
|
A law enforcement supervisor who is trained to
facilitate delivery of the POST DVD line-up programs can use 20
minutes of existing briefing/line-up time to satisfy in-service training
requirements. Just 20 minutes, three days each week, can provide 52 hours of quality training for law enforcement and dispatch
personnel at virtually no additional cost.
This training opportunity will work for
agencies of all sizes even if the agency doesn't have a formalized
briefing/line-up time period. A trained supervisor can provide
POST certified training using a DVD-based telecourse to one or more
officers in periods of time from as little as 20 minutes up to 2 hours
(or the full length of any given telecourse).
A trained dispatch supervisor can provide
a quality training experience to one or more dispatchers without leaving
the agency building. This program provide a maximum amount of
flexibility to meet a wide range of law enforcement agency needs. |
|
How To Get Started
Training workshops for law enforcement
supervisors and dispatch supervisors are available throughout California
at no cost to POST agencies. All workshops are POST
certified as Plan IV courses. Workshop participants will receive
16 hours of CPT training credit. Agencies should send sergeants or
dispatch supervisors who can be assigned to facilitate the delivery of
DVD-based training to their subordinates. This workshop will
include: |
-
An overview and samples of
POST DVD-based training programs.
-
A 10-step method for
facilitating video programs in a group setting.
-
Develop individual style
facilitating video training.
-
Interaction with law
enforcement personnel experienced in delivery a variety of DVD-based
programs.
-
All materials necessary to
begin a POST approved program.
