1. What are the learning goals? Consult
the P.O.S.T. Training Specifications and P.O.S.T. Learning Domain
Workbook. Contact the Academy Coordinator to discuss academy
specific goals related to the topic.
2. What are the required topics? The
required topics are identified in the P.O.S.T. Training Specifications and
P.O.S.T. Learning Domain Workbook.
3. What are the required learning
activities? Required learning activities are
identified in the P.O.S.T. Training Specifications. Use the
P.O.S.T. Instructors' Guide to Learning Activities For Leadership,
Ethics, and Community Policing. Discuss
potential alternatives with the Academy Coordinator.
4. How many students are in the class? The
Academy Coordinator or Recruit Training Officer can provide this
information.
5. How much time is provided to teach the
class? Consult the academy schedule.
6. How is the subject content going to be
tested? Consult the academy schedule.
7. What instructional methods would work best
given the known constraints? Lecture is the
least effective method of instruction. Think about engaging the
students in discussion or an activity involving some level of
application. Use visual aids to enhance classroom discussions and to
illustrate the major points for each topic.
8. What resources are required to carry out the
instructional plan? Handout materials needed
for the class must be submitted to the Academy Coordinator at least one
month ahead of time. Avoid duplicating information available in the
P.O.S.T. Learning Domain Workbooks. Contact the Instructional
Assistant through this website, by telephone, or by FAX to request
equipment at least 72 hours before the class.
9. What are the reasons for students to learn this
material? Identify "what's in it for
me" from the students' perspective and identify the reasons students
need to learn the subject matter.
10. How is this material linked to other blocks of
instruction in the course? Think about how the
subject matter being considered is linked to topics such as report
writing, use of force, officer safety, professionalism/ethics, and multi-culturalism.
Consult the Educational Philosophy.
11. What do students need to do to prepare for
this block of instruction? One way of gaining
additional class time for application and learning activities is to assign
preparation reading ahead of time. Consider having students read a
portion of the P.O.S.T. Learning Domain Workbooks to prepare for the
class. Call the Recruit Training Officer at least 72 hours ahead of
time to arrange for an assignment to be made.
12. How can learning be evaluated at the end of
the block of instruction? Consider including a
"re-cap" of the major points and topics at the end of the
presentation. Ask students questions or use a game, such as Game
Show Pro, to reinforce the lesson. |
