August 30, 2001, the Criminal Justice Training Center presented a Journey to a Hate Free Millennium. Over
600 students, instructors, and community members listened to a two-hour,
high-impact program that included a showing of the now famous documentary,
Journey To A Hate Free Millennium as well as a
live presentations by the film's producer,
Brent Scarpo. Mr. Scarpo was joined by Mrs. Judy Shepard, mother
of college student Matthew Shepard who was the victim of a hate motivated
murder in October of 1998. In addition, the program featured a live
performance of
What
Matters, a song written and performed by
Randi
Driscoll.
This program was not about being white or black, male or
female, gay or straight, Jewish or Christian. It was about hate, the
devastation hate causes, and about how to overcome intolerance and
ignorance. Beyond our individual beliefs and values, we are as human
beings, far more alike than we are different, yet people are killing
people from a hatred of what little is different.
The real story is that one person has the power to make
a difference. People are not born to hate. Hate is a learned
behavior and it can be unlearned. Individuals can make a conscious
decision not to hate. An individual can create change by being a
leader and by not tolerating in tolerance.
The journey begins with me...
