Craig McCarthy put himself
through the basic police academy at
Napa Valley
College
and graduated from Class 35 in June of 1998.
He served the Napa Police Department until
October of 2007 before falling to cancer.
Officer McCarthy enjoyed a highly successful
career as a member of the Napa Police Department SWAT Team and as a
skillful patrol officer.
He was best known for being an inspirational
leader and for having unwavering professional ethics.

McCarthy believed in training and loved the police academy.
He established this scholarship to recognize
a graduate from each class who exemplifies conduct and performance that
represent the essential principles he believed in.
This scholarship is funded through an endowment
established from donations provided by the McCarthy family, Napa Police
Department, and members of law enforcement from throughout the region.
The Craig McCarthy Scholarship will be awarded at
graduation to one cadet who meets the following criteria:
- Begins the academy as a self-sponsored
students
- Achieves the highest combined score in
Physical Skills and Desire for Self-Improvement
- Earns a place in the "Lifetime 600 Club"
- Fully participates in the lifetime
fitness program
- Demonstrates ethical conduct and teamwork
throughout the academy program.

In the case of a tie, the cadet who achieves the
highest score on the Ethics Oral Board and final Physical Fitness test
shall be awarded the scholarship. |
