Pledges From The Campus Community

Napa Valley College is a campus community committed to inclusion, acceptance, and safety for everyone.  The following is a list of pledges submitted by members of our community to stop hate!  These pledges are based on ideas being promoted in our "10 Ways In Ten Months To Stop Hate" campaign.  They are published here for everyone to see both as a sign of unity as well as to provide readers with ideas for making a pledge of their own.
  • I pledge to keep an open mind and to remember that we all come from many different life styles.
  • My plan to stop hate starts by the way I treat others.  I believe hate can be stopped by treating others as you would want to be treated.
  • I pledge to stop hate by telling my friends about the serious consequences of hate.
  • I pledge to not jump to conclusions about people by labeling them.
  • I will talk to my friends about the issues of diversity and about what other schools are doing to stop hate in order to learn about new ideas that NVC hasn't thought of yet.
  • I am going to sit in a different seat each day of class so that I can form a friendship with someone I wouldn't normally have even talked to.
  • I pledge to respect other people's views on things that I view differently.
  • I will do my best to stop hate in whatever situations I may find it.
  • I pledge to start learning more about every race so that I can teach my daughter the truth about different cultures.
  • This month, I will examine NVC's Diversity Plan to see where my help might be needed.
  • I pledge to talk with different people every chance I can get.
  • I pledge to stop being hostile to those who are different from me.
  • I pledge to be proactive in education persons about human rights and needs.
  • I pledge to add a link to the "10 Ways In Ten Months To Stop Hate" web page to my faculty web page.
  • I pledge to spread the word by adding, "Name it, know it, and say something to stop it," to my email signature.
  • I pledge to always speak out against hate, racism, or prejudice.-
  • I pledge to respect each and every person for who they are, regardless of the color of their skin or their ethnicity.  We are more alike than we are different.
  • I pledge to respectfully remind faculty members that there are students in their classes that do not, and cannot, relate in the same typical way others do.
  • I pledge to stop hate by educating the students in all of my classes about the definitions of bias incidents and hate crimes.
  • I'm going to relate to hate victims... and provide comfort.
  • I'm going to tell all of my friends about "passing the torch."
  • I'm going to get involved by telling all of my friends about the "Stop the Hate" program.
  • The way I will stop hate is by being friendly to not only the people I know but everyone around me.  I won't treat anyone like they are more or less than me but as an equal.
  • My pledge this month is to ask 5 of my fellow students if they have ever been personally involved, or known anyone close to them that has suffered from hate directed at them due to their race, sex or anything else that might apply. I will listen without judging and acknowledge their feelings in a supportive way.
  • My pledge is to accept difference as a positive and not a negative.
  • I vow to promote dialogue.  A way to a more peaceful community is by simply taking time to talk to somebody.
  • I pledge to comfort specific victims and honor those who are united against hate.
  • The first plan of action I plan to take is stopping hateful speech.  I will speak out against racist jokes and make it known that it is not funny to act so ignorant.
  • My action plan is to challenge every individual to look inside themselves at the fear they have and begin to face those fears so the walls of hatred will no longer exist.
  • To stop hate, I would take action by not being racist myself and when someone says something about someone that is considered racist, I would stand up to them and tell them that it isn't right and it hurts people a lot.
  • The way I can prevent hate is to not hate others because they are not like you.
  • I will pass on the information I learn from reading this website.
  • I will find someone who is sitting alone at lunch, study hall, or anywhere I feel it appropriate on campus and to share with them the importance of this program and how to get involved.
  • My action plan includes not condoning or promoting ridiculous, crude, vulgar, or other unacceptable jokes.
  • I will not use racial slurs.
  • I will stop using racial humor.
  • When I see a racial problem occur, I will say something rather than stay quiet.
  • I pledge to make the first move to join people in my classes that look like they are being left-out or afraid of joining a group discussion.
  • I will not prejudge people and will not being around people who are hateful.  I will talk to those who are targets of bullying, become friends with others that are of difference races, religions and sexual orientation, and stand up for those that are being bullied.
  • I will avoid degrading or stereotypical slurs and will speak out when hearing their use.  I will not judge anybody before I get to know them personally.  I will report acts of hate or suspicious persons to the campus police.
  • I am going to smile at everyone I see and try to make people see the good things in others.
  • When I see a student sitting alone, I will ask to sit with them and get to know them.
  • In my class, I will introduce students to the concept that casual statements like, "that's to retarded," and, "that's so gay," actually perpetuate stigma and do harm.
  • I pledge to embrace differences, to encourage open communication, to share smiles, and greet all as I walk by.
  • I pledge to help stop hate by simply talking, sharing and informing people I may cross paths with about my own ethnicity whenever possible.
  • I plan to speak out and teach tolerance by posting the guideline "Ten Ways to Fight Hate on Campus" on the window outside the Writing Center.
  • I am going to do a training with this material as a reminder that we all must participate in fighting hate on campus and that we all have a responsibility to report any incidents or crimes on campus.
  • I will never let a racial or prejudicial remark or joke go by without stating how hurtful and mean it is.  I will encourage my friends to refrain from such "entertainment" at the expense of someone else.
