Public Safety Dispatcher Course

The Public Safety Dispatcher course is certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and is the required entry-level training for all law enforcement dispatchers in California.  The course includes 120 hours of instruction and graduates earn 3 units of college credit.  The course includes variety of topics including professionalism and ethics, cultural diversity, criminal law, telephone call taking procedures, radio procedures, emergency operations and scenario training.  Students must complete all required learning activities and miss no more than 6 hours of instruction in order to received a certificate of completion and POST credit for the course.

The Public Safety Dispatcher course is open to sponsored students (those hired and sent by a public safety agency) and non-sponsored students (any new or existing student at Napa Valley College).  Registration for this course is completed using the regular college admissions and semester registration process and timeline.

Step 1 For All New Students (sponsored and non-sponsored who have not taken credit classes at Napa Valley College in the last 3 years): Complete An Application For Admission – CCC Apply

Step 2 For non-sponsored or sponsored students: Register and pay for the class using the MyNVC mini portal.  This is same process for any other credit class at the college.

Step 2 For sponsored students only: If you prefer, sponsored students or their training manager may download a CJTC credit registration form and mail it completed along with a check payable to Napa Valley College for the full cost of the course.  A seat is not guaranteed until the completed form and check are received.  Mail the form and check to:

9-1-1 Dispatcher Certificate of Achievement

In addition to meeting California POST requirements, this course is required by Napa Valley College for the 9-1-1 Dispatcher Certificate of Achievement. This certificate is recorded on a student’s college transcript.

CJT 296 Public Safety Dispatchers Basic Course – 3 units
ADMJ 120 Introduction to the Administration of Justice – 3 units
ADMJ 121 Introduction to Criminal Law – 3 units
ADMJ 122 Introduction to Criminal Procedures – 3 units
ADMJ 123 Introduction to Community Policing – 3 units

This certificate is perfect for students pursuing a career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher with a public safety agency. The program includes completion of the required California P.O.S.T. certified dispatcher academy. Students completing this course at another college can transfer the course to Napa Valley College and apply the units toward this certificate.
